Botox or Baking Soda?

Apparently, I'm entering the season of life in which my children are beginning to think their Mama is old.  I can't say that I blame them.  When I was barely double digits, I thought the thirty-somethings were quite 'mature', too.  ;)

I must confess that ever since my mid-30's, some of this Botox stuff has looked quite tempting.  The wrinkles are growing wrinkles now.  I don't like this part of aging.

If you know me, you know that I would not {want to} willingly inject such toxins into my face; however, I think my girls may have found a solution!

We have just wrapped up our first lesson in anatomy, and boy did we learn a lot.  I don't know many 8 yr olds who know what a mitochondria is, much less, pronounce it.  If you ask my girls, they would be able to tell you that the "my' tuh kon' dree uh" {yeah, that's the text I have to read} is the power plant to the cell.  Impressive, yes? :)

In studying the history of anatomy, we talked about the Egyptians, and how they 'mummified' people.  Even though the Egyptians had some strange religious beliefs, they seemed ahead of their time when it came to the body.

Here was our 'mummy' experiment...

We peeled 2 apples.  One apple would sit in a mixture of baking soda and salt, while the other sat without... for a week.

Looks yummy, yes?

Our initial reaction was that the 'mummified' apple looked like our control apple.

Our investigation wasn't over.  Mama dissected those bad boys.  The girls were completely grossed-out at the mere thought of it.  I predict we will not be dissecting bugs and such in the future?

Apparently, the control apple had grown mold!  Eureka!  Those Egyptians were on to something!

Religion?  A different story.  It seems they believed that upon death, the gods would weigh your heart, and if it were heavier than a special feather one of the gods kept, you wouldn't get into heaven.  Yikes.

Spelling aside, I love how Gracie gets right to the point in her conclusion.  :)  Now, I may not be able to stop the aging process, but maybe I can slow it down a bit.

On that note, I'm off to fill my cart with Baking Soda and salt, then it's off to Home Depot, where I'll be buying Spackle in bulk!  Maybe I can figure out how to camouflage the wrinkles within the wrinkles.

  2. Yes, I'd say if they get grossed out when you dissect apples, the frogs may be a little bit of a problem! Sounds like the school year is off to a good start!

  6. Well, I don't think I can follow the anonymous comment : )

I will just say that the age we consider 'old' gets older with every passing year.
