Things learned in dance

When pink is gone, yellow isn't so bad.  In fact, it can be quite cool.  And when sister makes bunny ears behind Mom's head, friends think it's funny.  Camp is better shared with a friend.

If Gracie talks about how everyone has silly bandz except for her, Mom will buy her girls... a few.

And make a new bag out of an outgrown skirt in a pinch.  And spring-clean a certain ballerina's bedroom.

Mom will show up 1 1/2 hrs early and stand in the hot sun... just to be an extra pair of eyes, making sure everyone stays safe in the pool.

Teenagers can be very nice to lil' girls.  Gracie may want to grow up and be a 'counselor' at a dance camp one day, too.   Crafts are part of dance camp. Decorating flip-flops and drink holders.  Who knew flip-flops could be used as dance shoes??  I kid.

Dance camp may sound like a lot of fun and sister may want to join for more than just swimming... but will have to wait and make that decision next year.  She chose science classes this summer.

Two darling ballerinas + sweet music = emotional mom.

Dad will arrive just in time to see the end-of-camp recital. In a pinch, Mom can work a camera in one hand, while videoing in the other.

We can start a recital at 5 pm, complete it, mingle, and meet Dad at home as soon as it's over for the much anticipated Daddy/Daughter dance starting at 7 pm {pix forthcoming}!  Oh, yes, we can!

***************************************

Mom will later have a conversation about one girl's chosen dance moves at the recital and will remind Gracie that as soon as she chooses to dance like that, there will be no more dance lessons.  Gracie will ask why. Mom will tell her that a 'proper' lady does not dance like that.  She innocently responds, "But I'm not proper."

Mom may or may not be successful at concealing her laughter.

Mom and Gracie will then have a conversation on the definition...
'proper' = appropriate.

Mom will then tell Gracie that when she is older, Mom will explain 'why' some choreography is not 'appropriate', but for now... all she needs to know is that those moves are not {and never will be} 'proper'.

Gracie responds, "Oh."

And they danced... happily ever after.

The End.

  3. Gotta love that conversation. I have, successfully, brainwashed my daughter to think that short shorts are not good. Since she was little I always pointed out the girls with too short shorts and said things like "Wow Bella don't you think those shorts are too short, I think those are awful"...she now doesn't like short shorts.

One in the win column of raising a girl.

  4. That last picture is just adorable. Hope you got it blown up and framed! What I would've given to have been a fly on the wall to hear that conversation about being "proper"! Good for you for explaining appropriate behavior for girls their age!

  5. A mother's job is hard. But the rewards are great. Good for you!

Just today I was with my almost 20 year old who was trying on clothes...she came out of the dressing room in a skirt, looked at me and said, "I know...I'm too 'leggy' in this aren't I?' Too leggy is my code word for 'the skirt is too short' : )
